THE POTENTIAL OF ENERGY GENERATION FROM MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE:THE CASE OF AFRICA

Abstract

The projects aim is to compile a report on the potential of energy generation from municipal solid waste in Africa. In this report analysis will be done on the most suitable technology option for energy generation in Africa given the present state of municipal waste composition, quantities and management in the various cities.

The report will review the production and use of modernized biomass energy in Africa. Energy generation from municipal waste, and in particular solid waste. As shown in the figure below, the study focus is at the intersection of 3 interrelated subjects, namely:

  • Urbanization, as a result of high population growth rates and rural to urban migration
  • Increased urban energy demand, partly driven by urbanization
  • Increased need for better municipal solid waste management, driven by higher generation of waste which is linked to rapid urbanization
