DEVELOPING AN ENERGY DATABASE FOR EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN COUNTRIES

By

JOHN KIMANI

PROJECT BRIEF

This project aims to compile energy data for eastern and southern African countries.  The data to be compiled is on energy supply and demand as well as data that could be useful for studies such as those on demand-side management (DSM), energy pricing, energy sector reforms, capacity building, management and efficiency and environmental impact from the use of energy as well as other emerging issues.

The database will be electronic and should be flexible enough to ensure that it is user-friendly such that users can make their selection (countries and indicators) as well as presentation format according to their data needs.  At a later point in time, the database will be frozen and used to produce annual energy data publications for distribution among the energy community interested in the African energy sector.  This will, however, be a separate activity out of the scope of this project but needs to be considered because it will affect the designing of the database.

By the end of this project, however, will have some outputs such as diskettes and CD-ROMs containing the database that will be distributed, initially, to the AFREPREN/FWD network members.  Limited access to the database will be made possible through the AFREPREN/FWD website.
