Renewables/Efficiency in a Reforming Power Sector.

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) is a global post-World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) Type 2 partnership that aims at delivering the energy policy objectives agreed at the WSSD and take forward the recommendations of the G8 Renewable Taskforce. Its overarching aim is to accelerate and expand the global market for renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies particularly in the reforming power sector. REEEP’s key objectives are to:

  • Identify and remove market barriers to the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies in the reforming power sector.

  • Increase access to financing for renewable energy and energy efficient technologies in the reforming power sector.

AFREPREN/FWD organized a stakeholders’ consultative workshop which was held on 9th -10th June 2003. The workshop participants were drawn from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Mauritius. It brought together energy experts from Government,  utilities,  regulatory bodies,  sugar and other cogeneration private companies,  academic institutions,  non-governmental organisations,  renewable energy agencies,  private companies,  financial institutions and donors.

The key objectives of the consultative workshop were to:

  1. Introduce the participants to REEEP.

  2. Discuss the status of reforms in the various Eastern African countries and barriers to  REEES in the electricity industry.

  3. Identify initiatives for promoting the use of renewables and efficiency systems in a reforming power sector.
